Zoom Lecture Series at the Schocken Institute of Jewish Studies - JTS

In this lecture series, we will examine the relations between Jews and non-Jews as reflected in various texts throughout history. The series will focus on connections that arise in peripheral spaces that are often overlooked, such as vernacular writings, marginal figures, or material culture. Although these connections are not represented in mainstream discourse, they constitute a significant layer in the fabric of relations between Israel and other peoples.

In the series, we will examine the various ramifications of the relations between Jews and non-Jews: where is there mutual enrichment or, conversely, conflict, and why? What is the gap between normative teachings and reality? What opportunities for interaction are exploited and in what ways? What conscious processes are unfolding and what underground currents are occurring alongside them? What representations are used in the discourse and what essentialist concepts do they symbolize? These and other questions will help to create an additional and distinct layer for understanding Israel's relations with other nations.
