Truman Burbank is an average 30-year-old American who lives with his smiling wife in a pleasant home in a well-kept town, surrounded by kind neighbors. He has a good job, a loyal friend, and a wonderful view—and yet, something is not right. A vague feeling of unease accompanies him, as though the world around him is not exactly what it claims to be. Truman still does not know that his entire life is taking place within the enormous set of a television show, that he is its leading character, and that all the people close to him are actors. As the cracks in reality multiply, so does his desire to understand what lies beyond the boundaries of the world built for him.
More than a quarter of a century after its release, Peter Weir’s entertaining and disturbing film remains open to countless interpretations: a satire of consumer and television culture, an exploration of the limits of consciousness, and a parable about a man seeking to claim the right to choose his own life. It is also the film in which Jim Carrey fully revealed the sensitivity and fragility hidden behind his wild comic persona.
