An exhibition by artist Ze’ev Engelmayer, documenting through illustrated postcards the days of the war, the events and the emotions that have accompanied us all since October 7.
On the first day of the disaster, artist Ze’ev Engelmayer drew a pencil sketch that was a cry of anguish. From that moment, throughout the days of fighting, anxiety and anticipation, “The Daily Postcard” became a living, activist and uncompromising testimony to the spirit of the period.
At the heart of the project, which became an extraordinary life’s work, lies a deep and painful connection with the families of the hostages. At the families’ request, Engelmayer began drawing their loved ones in captivity. Each postcard became a living portrait, bringing the person back into the public’s heart and consciousness, and a tool crying out for their return.
Every day, until the long-awaited day when the last hostage was returned, the nation’s innermost feelings were translated into images: the days of the releases, the displaced, the demonstrations in the streets, the mourning for those murdered, alongside hope and anticipation.
The selected postcards will be displayed at the Herzliya City Hall plaza in chronological order, from the first postcard drawn on the day of the disaster to the most recent, drawn on the day the last hostage’s body was returned. The journey among the images, created by Engelmayer, is a shared step along the historical and emotional path we have all walked.
This is an invitation to look, remember, empathize and appreciate the power of the drawing hand to transform a cry into comfort and hope.
