A meeting with author Yishai Sarid about his new book, compassion, ancient medicine, and literature.
Hanoch, a doctor from the ancient settlement of Korazim, sets out day and night to treat the residents of the villages near the Sea of Galilee, trying to save them from illness, suffering, and death.
He struggles not only against the forces of nature, but also against the persecution of Rabbi Meir, the village’s head of the rabbinical court.
One day, a miracle worker appears in the village—Jesus of Nazareth—and a relationship develops between him and Hanoch, marked by closeness alongside suspicion and rivalry. One is a deeply human hero, well aware of his limitations, while the other claims to be an all-powerful savior.
This is also the story of the younger generation in the family, Hanoch’s children, who struggle to find their independent path and their freedom. The book takes place many years ago, yet it is closely connected to our lives today.
During the meeting, Yishai Sarid will speak about the need for compassion and kindness in days when hatred and bitterness prevail; about choosing a story that takes place many years ago, how it was written, and how Sarid researched ancient medicine; and about literature, which enables us to breathe deeply and become wiser.
Yishai Sarid is an Israeli author and lawyer, winner of the Bernstein Prize for Literature and international awards.
