In this lecture, we will learn about the Sicilian Mafia, “Cosa Nostra,” and those who decided to fight it against all odds.
Using maps and historical photographs, Itai Anghel presents the history of Italy and Sicily, focusing on Sicily’s unique status and its transformations throughout history—from the periods of conquest by the Normans, Spaniards, and Arabs, through the unification of Italy, to its fascinating story during World War II and how the Sicilian Mafia assisted the Allies.
What are the roots of the Mafia, and where did it come from? What are the organization’s codes, and what lies behind the words “Cosa Nostra”?
We will discuss the Mafia wars of Palermo and Corleone, immigration to the United States, and the inspiration for The Godfather and The Sopranos, as well as the fight waged by the investigating judges against Cosa Nostra at the cost of their lives.
At the end of the lecture, we will screen Itai Anghel’s documentary film, Men of Honor – The War on the Sicilian Mafia.
