Classical Music by Candlelight in an Ancient Monastery by the Sea

You’ll be welcomed onto the roof of an ancient monastery in Jaffa, with sea air, hundreds of candles, and the beauty of classical music performed by a string quintet.

Here, the classical music everyone knows and loves will sound different.

Vivaldi’s elements will come alive amid the sea waves: from the sunny breath of “Spring” to the dramatic finale of “The Storm.”

Mozart—light as a summer evening.

His nighttime serenade will become a romantic beginning to the journey, while the energy of the “Queen of the Night” will take on a daring quality in the strings’ performance.

The music of Albinoni and Schubert, with their gentle lyricism; the fire of Brahms’s Hungarian Dances; the French sensuality of “Carmen” beneath violins soaring somewhere into the clouds.

Strauss’s waltzes will lift you above the rooftops of the old city, while Piazzolla will add passion and sensuality with his tango.

Classical music can be alive, moving, and full of emotion. On evenings like these, you can feel the full beauty of the moment: the candlelight, the ancient monastery walls, and the Mediterranean Sea directly behind the musicians. “Una Cabeza” will sound like a scene from a film taking place right before your eyes.

This concert is not about genres and eras, nor about old chairs with worn upholstery and a heavy curtain. It is about us, about this eternal city falling asleep as lights fade in the distance. The sea breathes below, while the music sounds so close.

The concert features musicians from the Rishon LeZion Orchestra (the Israel Opera Orchestra) and the Philharmonic Orchestra.

Please note: The concert takes place outdoors on the grounds of an ancient monastery by the sea. Evenings by the sea can be cool, so we recommend bringing a light shawl or something warm in case of chilly weather.

Please also note that there is no bar or café on the monastery grounds.

The monastery entrance is from the Jaffa promenade, not through the Old City.
