"Yakish and Popcha" is Hanoch Levin's 19th play. Like many of his works, it was written by him and premiered at the Cameri Theater in 1986. In that production, Aaron Almog and Gitta Monte played Yakish and Popcha, Albert Cohen played the matchmaker, and Zahira Harifai played the prostitute.
"Yakish and Popcha" is a funny, witty, and rhythmic play with numerous linguistic flourishes. Levin defined the play as a dark comedy.
The play tells the story of Yakish, an ugly and poor young man who marries out of necessity the hideous Popcha, who looks like a crocodile. When the two fail to fulfill the commandment of "be fruitful and multiply" together, a bizarre and mad journey begins involving the parents of the groom and bride, a matchmaker, a brother-in-law, and a prostitute (who is incidentally "not at all what she appears to be"). In this mad journey, everyone tries to enable the "incapable one" to finally mate with the "formless one." "Yakish and Popcha" can be seen as a play about the images, expectations, and stereotypes that people impose on the sexuality of others and themselves. Everyone interferes in others' sex lives; everyone tries to be what others see in their fantasies, instead of simply being who they are.
The performance is accompanied by a live orchestra.
