Venice. 18th century. The Ospedale della Pietà. Here grow girls abandoned as infants on its steps. They grow up and begin to learn musical instruments. Then an orchestra is formed from them, which plays high in the church galleries where no one can see their faces, but everyone can hear their violins. They have nothing but a cap, a gray linen dress, virginity, hope of being married off, and music. And then Antonio Vivaldi comes to the orphanage. For these girls, he will write his most beautiful violin passages; for them, he will write the legendary Four Seasons and that very Spring...
The film is a free adaptation of Tiziano Scarpa's novel Stabat Mater, winner of the prestigious Italian Strega Prize in 2009.
