Documentary evening about Babyn Yar — on October 4 at 19:00 at ANU – Museum of the Jewish People. A discussion about the history of the escape and preserving memory.
Special Evening Marking the 85th Anniversary of the Babyn Yar Tragedy
On September 29, 1941, mass shootings of Jews began in occupied Kyiv at Babyn Yar. Exactly two years later, on the night of September 28–29, 1943, prisoners whom the Nazis had forced to destroy the bodies of those killed and erase the traces of the crime made a desperate attempt to escape.
One of those who managed to survive was Zakhar (Zyama) Abramovich Trubakov—a prisoner of the Syrets concentration camp and a witness to the destruction of the traces of the mass murders at Babyn Yar.
To mark the 85th anniversary of the Babyn Yar tragedy, ANU—Museum of the Jewish People and the “Jewish Heroes” project invite you to a special evening: a conversation in the format of a documentary investigation into the escape from Babyn Yar, archival evidence, and the people who managed to preserve the truth.
Anna Nevzlin, head of the “Jewish Heroes” project, will tell the story of the escape and the fate of one of its participants.
Arkady Zeltser, director of the Center for the Study of the History of the Holocaust in the Soviet Union, will present the historical context of the tragedy and discuss how Babyn Yar was perceived in the USSR during World War II.
Roza Topanova, Director General of the Babyn Yar National Historical and Memorial Reserve, will discuss what is currently happening at Babyn Yar and how the memory of the tragedy is preserved in modern conditions.
Andriy Kohut, director of the Archives of the Security Service of Ukraine, will present documents and archival evidence related to Babyn Yar and the Syrets camp.
The evening will be moderated by Lika Dlugach, producer, journalist, and presenter.
The event will be held in Russian and Ukrainian.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes.
