The Shoemaker and the Elves

Michael, a young boy who lives in a small village in Italy, doesn’t understand why people need to do good deeds. In his opinion, giving without receiving anything in return is a waste of time. Even visiting his grandfather Alberto seems like a waste of time to him. What will he get in return?

Grandfather Alberto is the village shoemaker, and all the villagers love him. He repairs everyone’s shoes and makes new shoes to order—and for those who cannot pay, he gives the shoes as a gift. Grandfather knows that good deeds are never wasted: they return when least expected and surprise us.

One day, difficult news arrives. The queen announces that she wants to close the beloved shoe shop and turn the place into a private swimming pool exclusively for herself. She agrees to cancel the decree if Grandfather makes her a new and magnificent pair of shoes every day—shoes the likes of which have never been seen anywhere in the kingdom.

But Grandfather cannot make so many pairs of shoes on his own. What will happen to the shoe shop?

Two small and charming elves come to Grandfather’s aid—magical elves who love helping those who help others. Will the shoe shop now be saved? Will the villagers help Grandfather Alberto in his hour of need? Will Michael understand that good deeds are never wasted and return to us at the most unexpected moments?

And we’ll let you in on a secret: the elves did not leave empty-handed or return home barefoot. Can you guess who made them shoes as a gift without asking for anything in return?
