The Fisherman and the Goldfish
The story takes place on a small fishing island in Greece, whose residents are simple people living modestly without any modern innovations. No televisions and no cars—just a simple, pleasant life in which everyone is friends with everyone and content with what they have.
Until one day, a boy named Esteban pulls a seashell from the sea. When he blows into it, a talking goldfish rises from the water. In exchange for its freedom, the goldfish promises to grant all of Esteban’s wishes.
When Esteban’s friends, the villagers, discover the wonder, their requests grow larger and larger. The modest island becomes crowded with cars and unnecessary objects, while the sea and beaches fill with pollution.
When Esteban realizes that the residents’ greed is harming the environment and their friendships—and is nearly killing the goldfish—he makes one final wish that ensures the story will have a happy ending.
