Argaman Reading Point: Meir Shalev "For the First Time in the Bible" and "The Bible Today"
A literary event about Meir Shalev’s books will take place on September 28 at 7:00 p.m. at Dacha TLV, Tel Aviv. We will discuss the Tanakh, literature, and human stories.
“Reading Point” invites you to an autumn get-together! On the last Monday of September, we will discuss two books by Meir Shalev: Firsts in the Bible and The Bible Today.
How many things happen for the first time in our canonical texts? The first laugh, the first dream, the first love, the first jealousy, and even the first murder. These are the “first times” that Shalev draws attention to in Firsts in the Bible, examining familiar stories as if we were reading them for the first time. Why do these particular episodes become models for hundreds of stories that humanity will tell afterward? And what changes when, instead of seeing a sacred text, you begin to see very good literature?
In The Bible Today, Shalev goes even further: he takes a close look at the characters of the Tanakh—their personalities, strange decisions, family dramas, love, envy, ambitions, and conflicts—and discovers that over several thousand years, people apparently have not changed all that much.
We are planning to drink wine (or perhaps cocoa by then?), recall our favorite biblical stories, argue, and discuss Meir Shalev’s novellas—a writer who knows how to read and retell the Tanakh with love for the original source, gentle irony, and tremendous attention to words and details.
