The Biblical Zoo in Jerusalem, which attracts hundreds of thousands of Israelis and Palestinians, religious and secular alike, seeks to inspire compassion in them through captive animals that serve as “ambassadors” for nature. The zoo’s staff understand that it is a moral compromise and grapple with visitors’ indifference.
