In 1989, Hossein Sabzian, an unemployed and eccentric film enthusiast, was arrested in Tehran after impersonating the esteemed director Mohsen Makhmalbaf and successfully infiltrating the life of a middle-class family.
Sabzian, posing as Makhmalbaf, promises the family he will direct a movie set in their home, starring the family members themselves. Abbas Kiarostami encountered the case in real time, obtained exceptional permission to film the trial itself, and proposed an extraordinary cinematic approach: to reenact the story on screen with the real people involved—Sabzian and the family members, playing themselves.
The film constantly shifts between documentary and reenactment, creating a unique space where reality, memory, and imagination blend together. "Close-Up" is not just a story about disguise and deception, but a deep exploration of identity, social class, and the longing to be seen and exist through cinema, to the point where it becomes difficult to distinguish where life ends and the film begins.
