A unique and in‑depth journey through the cultural and historical heritage assets of the Western Negev—right here, near the house. The course combines lectures and tours, offering close acquaintance with fascinating stories, special places, and surprising collections from Israel and abroad.
The course is led by Dr. Nirith Shelo Kalifa, curator and museum‑collections researcher, and Mid Ben Tzvi. Each session opens a new window onto another angle of the local narrative—between past, present, and a living regional identity.
Upcoming Session (open to new participants) – Closing Meeting: “Kalanit Before the Rain” & Settlement in the Summer Heat
We will meet for the final tour of the season in Kibbutz Alumim, where we’ll learn about the pioneering settlement story of Be’erot Yitzhak (the old settlement) through a display of storytelling objects. In a pleasant, air‑conditioned setting with light refreshments, we will hear a lecture on the commemoration initiative “Kalanit Before the Rain.” The project was launched after 7 October and has grown into a large‑scale effort of memory, community, and hope.
During the lecture we will be introduced to the project’s story—from the first public call, through the creation of hundreds of thousands of ceramic kalanit (anemones), to their placement at memorial sites across the country.
Afterwards we will travel in private vehicles to tours of three main sites where the initiative operated:
- HaRakevim Site – Tekuma
- HaTzefitaniyot Site (Observation Towers)
- Nova Site
The tours will let us closely examine the installations, the stories behind them, and the way the kalanit have become a language of commemoration, memory, and hope in the Western Negev landscape.
