Nahal Sorek National Park: Following the Cormorants and the Golden Dunes

About the Activity

In honor of the migration season, we invite you to a magical and fascinating afternoon hike along the Sorek River estuary!

Every year, enormous flocks of cormorants and migratory birds arrive at the estuary. This time, we will set out to closely follow one of the season’s most spectacular natural spectacles.

We will begin our journey with a pleasant walk along the estuary, learn about the area’s unique ecosystem, and keep our eyes peeled toward Turtle Island in search of the softshell turtles that live in the river.

As the sun begins to set, we will reach the golden sand dunes, where we can roll around in the soft sand and enjoy breathtaking autumn sunset views.

We will end the hike with a particularly powerful moment: an exciting lookout over the flocks of cormorants and migratory birds resting in the trees and landing en masse for their overnight stay in the reserve.

Join us for a lighthearted family experience filled with wild nature, fun in the sand, and a spectacular display of sunset and migratory birds!

Important Information

• Activity area: Palmachim Nature Reserve
• Target audience: Families; children aged 5 and up
• Difficulty level: Easy
• Walking duration: Approximately 800 meters of level walking, including crossing through sand
• Route length: Approximately 2.5 km
• Required equipment: Closed shoes, at least 1.5 liters of water, and a hat
• Guidance: The instructional team of Shikmim Field School
