The new film by Almudovar, one of the most successful and beloved directors worldwide, is his most personal and moving work to date. “Merry Christmas Mr.” tells the story of Raul, a famous director in the midst of a writer’s block who draws inspiration from events in the life of his personal assistant. He creates the character Elsa, a filmmaker writing her own screenplay, in a journey that increasingly mirrors his own. As the two screenwriters merge into one, their lives become an intriguing game of reality, fiction, and a single question: How far can one go for art?
The film marks Almudovar’s return to his most celebrated and grand movies, offering a captivating, emotional, and intelligent story told through dazzling, colorful, and emotive cinema. It premiered in the official competition at Cannes, earning rave responses from both audiences and critics.
