Little Joe has no toys or nice clothes, but he has Lassie—his best friend and the most beautiful and intelligent dog in Greenold Bridge. All the villagers are amazed by Lassie and the tricks she performs, and she soon catches the attention of the wealthy Duke of Darling, who decides to buy her from Joe’s impoverished family and add her to his collection of dogs at the castle.

When Joe discovers that Haines, the duke’s cruel dog handler, intends to take Lassie to Scotland for training, he decides to break into the duke’s castle and rescue her. But the attempt fails, and Joe and his beloved dog find themselves trapped in the car’s trunk on their way to Scotland, together with Max, the duke’s cowardly and spoiled grandson.

Midway through the journey, Joe outwits the dog handler, and the three escape from the car. Now they are in the middle of nowhere, far from home, and must find a way back to the village without being caught. The long journey home is filled with adventures and dangers, but throughout the way, Lassie’s cleverness saves the two boys from trouble.

Little by little, Joe and Max turn from enemies into true friends—but will they manage to get home? And will they succeed in saving Lassie from the evil dog handler?
