In 1955, Yehuda Amichai published his first book and revolutionized Hebrew poetry. He brought the language of poetry down to the street and returned it to the language of ordinary people. In doing so, Amichai saved Hebrew poetry from the danger of excessive grandiloquence and irrelevance.
In his poems, Amichai developed a coherent philosophy on how one should live, love, and even die. He expressed everything with sensitivity, gentleness, and forgiveness, without avoiding sharp criticism, irony, and self-deprecating humor.
Amichai’s books have been translated into more than 40 languages, and he is considered the most successful Hebrew poet in the world.
In a fascinating lecture that also includes video clips and rare archival materials, we will delve into the poems and life story of one of Israel’s greatest poets.
Dr. Avi Alon is a researcher and lecturer on poetry throughout Israel. He appears on Radio 103FM and on Galatz to discuss the stories behind the great songs.
The coffee cart will be open before the event for your convenience.
