Saxophone virtuoso Steve Wilson

A captivating fusion of two musical styles—classical music and jazz. As part of the Third Stream movement, which emerged in the second half of the 20th century, a unique interaction develops between the precise structure and harmonies of classical music and the boundless freedom, energy, and improvisational mastery characteristic of jazz.

An exceptional quartet of musicians—Steve Wilson (saxophone), Alon Nechushtan (piano), Yurai Oron (double bass), and Dani Benedikt (drums)—presents a rich program featuring works that marked the rapprochement between these musical traditions.

The program includes “Take Five” by Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond, “Hommage to Bach” by Oscar Peterson, “Hommage to Chopin” by Dave Brubeck, and “Blues Baroque” by John Lewis and the Modern Jazz Quartet.

The influence of Third Stream extended far beyond jazz and contributed to the development of jazz rock. One prominent example is Keith Emerson, who drew inspiration from the music of Aaron Copland and created an impressive fusion of classical tradition and progressive rock. The concert will also feature “Jerusalem,” from the repertoire of the legendary trio Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

This evening will become a true musical mosaic, where traditional genre boundaries disappear and space opens for an exciting and inspiring dialogue between classical music, jazz, and free improvisation.
