"Dad Said It Would Be Fine and Then He Died" by Liri Yadín
At the age of thirteen, Liri lost her father to cancer.
This year, she will have lived more years without him than with him.
In this piece, she returns to 2012—the year he fell ill—and to that specific day in August when he died.
While her father took his last breaths in the living room, she was swimming laps in the pool.
The journey into the past unfolds through swimming training, attempts to find a cure and hope, life alongside a weakening body, and family memories from that period.
Again and again, she revives the past and tries to change it: to save her father, to free herself from guilt, and to grant them both a different ending.
Yet, even when the fantasy finally succeeds in defeating the cancer, reality refuses to change.
This is an autobiographical-fictional journey, an attempt to live alongside what cannot be changed.
