Agriculture and Nature Club for 5th–6th Graders, Led by Ofir Idan
Ofir Idan is a multidisciplinary artist who has been involved in environmental education in schools and the community for over twenty years. He is a teacher, entrepreneur, and founder of gardening farms and community gardens; he leads workshops on nature, agriculture, herbal medicine, foraging, and environmental research. He incorporates art workshops using reused materials and ancient crafts. In the past, he worked as an animal-assisted therapist and in therapeutic gardening, and is an expert in permaculture. He is the owner of Balot – Nature and Creative Workshops.
The club will serve as an educational space that connects the children, focusing on an intimate acquaintance with nature and the environment while fostering social and community connections, with an emphasis on sustainability and the natural resources around us. The activities will recreate and follow the path established in ancient times, when the community gathered around the well, which served as a social anchor and a place for cooperative encounters that called for action, creativity, and growth.
The club will take place on Thursdays from 3:30–5:00 p.m. in the grove and community garden of Beit HaBe’er BaHurusha. In the club, we will establish, cultivate, and learn about the garden and orchard, which will serve as a center for learning and experience. The activities will connect club members to the transitions between the seasons, holidays and special occasions, international nature-conservation dates, and, of course, to one another.
As part of the club, we will cook and prepare herbal remedies, create with wood, spin, weave, and revive ancient crafts. We will connect with animals in nature by building habitats for insects and birds. All of this will be accompanied by stories and legends, as well as up-to-date information about environmental conservation, ecology, and the integration of modern humans into the environment.
In all activities and meetings, we will relate to the four seasons and the four elements of nature—earth, water, fire, and air. In each of them, we will observe the changing and stable components of the environment, particularly animals, from the tiny and permanent to the large and transient, and we will engage with the earth and vegetation. During the club, we will establish and maintain a vegetable garden and a nursery, from which we will distribute plants to be returned to nature and transferred to residents’ gardens.
Weekly meetings on Thursdays, from October 8 through June 24, 2027, excluding holidays and school vacations, according to the Ministry of Education.
Hours: 3:30–5:00 p.m.
Location: Beit HaBe’er BaHurusha
