Judith Katz and Dr. Anabella Shaked in Conversation About Self-Worth, Mistakes, and Courage
What do parents want most for their children? For them to believe in themselves. To dare to try. Not to be broken by every mistake, and to know how to manage even when we are not beside them.
Every parent wants a child with self-confidence. The million-dollar question is: how do we make that happen?
Do we tell them they are champions every morning so they will believe in themselves—or show them their mistakes so they can improve? When they fail, do we do a little for them so they will come away feeling good?
And in general, is a sense of success more important than success itself?
How is it that we meet a child who has given up before even trying, or a girl who quits ballet because she is not in the front row? What do we do when he says he simply cannot, when we know that he actually can?
And this happens in the most everyday moments. She forgot her sandwich—should we bring it to her at school? He got into trouble with his English teacher—should we pick up the phone for him? He cannot manage—should we help him cope, or simply sort out the matter?
In a one-time evening event at Noga Center, Judith Katz and Dr. Anabella Shaked will meet for a live conversation about how self-confidence is truly built. In what surprising way does criticism affect children? What happens to children with overly supportive parents?
How do we, as parents, influence their self-worth? How do we help them understand that they have the strength to cope? What should we say to a child who is becoming discouraged?
We will talk about criticism, spoiling, overprotection, and encouragement—and about a new question to ask instead of “What is wrong with him?” It will be practical, a little painful, and a little funny. We will probably discover that our children are capable of more than we thought.
The challenge will be not to interfere with their discovering it.
The conversation is intended for parents of young children—from birth to age twelve.
