Over the course of several days in Nashville, Tennessee, the paths of a host of characters intersect: country singers and one-hit wonders, musicians, fans, journalists, dreamers, and politicians seeking to change the face of the United States. Robert Altman moves freely among them in a dizzying fashion, gathering conversations, performances, romances, ambitions, and disappointments, until dozens of small human stories come together to form a sweeping portrait of America. The music is not merely a soundtrack but part of the story: many of the songs were written and performed by the actors themselves, including “I’m Easy,” Keith Carradine’s beautiful song, which won the Academy Award. As the film progresses, the acidic comedy takes on an increasingly darker tone, and Altman blurs the boundaries between entertainment, politics, fame, and everyone’s desperate need to be seen and heard. Slightly more than fifty years after it was made, Nashville remains remarkably funny, sad, venomous, and disturbing. Not to be missed.
