Damiel and Cassiel (Bruno Ganz and Otto Sander) are a pair of angels who have wandered across divided Berlin for centuries. They are invisible to adults, but occasionally appear to the astonished eyes of children. With infinite patience, they listen to the thoughts of the city’s residents—their moments of joy and pain, loneliness, sorrow and hope.
When Damiel falls in love with Marion, a beautiful trapeze artist (Solveig Dommartin), he begins to long to give up eternal life, his heavenly perspective and his angel’s wings—and join the human race.
Questions about the meaning of human existence, memories of war, and the wounds of Germany and divided Berlin are masterfully woven into a romantic fantasy considered one of the greatest acts of magic in the history of cinema. Peter Handke wrote the poetic texts accompanying the angels, while the soundtrack features several leading voices in 1980s alternative music, including Tuxedomoon, Laurie Anderson, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and Israel’s Minimal Compact.
Wings of Desire is the kind of film that can change lives—and, in the same breath, earn a mocking and ungrateful (but tearfully funny) sketch from The Cameri Quintet.
