Budapest, 1957. Andor Hirsch, a 12-year-old Jewish boy, grows up on the stories his mother tells him about his father, who disappeared during World War II. His world is shaken when a rough-looking, violent man enters their lives and claims to be his real father. Andor refuses to accept him, but as the stranger takes up more space in their home and in his mother’s life, he is forced to confront a family truth that threatens to tear apart the story on which he was raised.
Inspired by the childhood memories of his father, László Nemes, the Oscar-winning director of Son of Saul, returns to postwar Central Europe in a coming-of-age drama about family, identity, and the scars left by the Holocaust and the Communist regime.
