The premiere of Brandon Thomas’s comedy took place on December 21, 1892, at London’s Royalty Theatre and became a theatrical sensation: the play ran for 1,466 consecutive performances—a record for its time. The story of two Oxford students who persuade their friend Babbs to disguise himself as a wealthy aunt from Brazil in order to uphold Victorian propriety traveled across every continent and inspired numerous films and musicals, from the 1941 Hollywood film starring Jack Benny to the 1948 Broadway musical adaptation Where’s Charley?, which won a Tony Award.
