Romania in the Footsteps of Dracula

Yoel Shtroog—a geographic photographer, journalist, and veteran lecturer, best known for his many years of work with Masa Aher magazine and for managing the Adama Yotzeret Center.

An exciting journey to a beautiful, green country of snowcapped mountains, fields still plowed with oxen, and harvests carried out with sickles and scythes—a country where traveling is a journey through time.

Romania is a marvelous blend of enchanting legends, a unique urban landscape, untamed nature, endless forests, fine cuisine, distinctive music, and a diverse and fascinating human landscape.

We will begin and end in Bucharest, the capital of Romania—a city that recalls the regime of the dictator President Ceaușescu. We will visit the enormous Palace of Parliament and stroll through the alleyways of the Old Town.

From there, we will head north and visit Brașov, Sibiu, Sighișoara, Timișoara, and Bran. Bran Castle was the home of the cruel Count Dracula, who inspired Bram Stoker, author of the most famous horror novel in history.

We will continue along the Transfăgărășan Highway, one of the most beautiful roads in all of Europe. This green, winding route leads to the peaks of the Carpathian Mountains on a journey through breathtaking landscapes.

We will ascend into the Carpathians, with their orchards, vineyards, diverse wildlife, abundant streams and springs, most of which make their way toward the Danube and from there to the Black Sea.

We will visit the villages of the Roma people living in Romania and continue to the Moldavia region, home to beautiful painted churches.

This armchair journey, presented by Yoel Shtroog, will take you to small towns in Transylvania, to the tales of Dracula, to the magic of Sinaia—a resort and ski destination—and to a small cemetery in Săpânța, northern Romania, known as the Merry Cemetery.
