When Bernarda's husband dies, she announces eight years of mourning and locks her five daughters inside their home. In the name of morality, honor, and family unity, the house that was supposed to protect them becomes a prison. Violence masquerades as order, and oppression as protection from the threatening outside world, but not all daughters are willing to accept this.
Federico Garcia Lorca was considered a dangerous figure due to his liberal views, his criticism of the government, and his homosexuality. The play "The House of Bernarda Alba" was written in 1936, and two months later its author was executed, with his burial place remaining unknown. The play was first performed only in 1945 and since then has become a worldwide classic.
