The classic ballet The Sleeping Beauty, performed by the State Theatre “Russian Ballet” under the direction of Vyacheslav Gordeev, promises to be a landmark event for Israeli ballet enthusiasts during the fall 2026 theatre season.

Classical Russian ballet and Tchaikovsky’s music, performed by one of the world’s finest ballet companies, have long been more than a pleasure for art lovers. They also offer a means of healing the soul through an encounter with the beauty and harmony embodied in the masterpiece The Sleeping Beauty.

This ballet can be called an encyclopedia of classical dance. The enchanting story, based on Charles Perrault’s fairy tale, has remained on the stages of the world’s leading theatres for more than a century since its triumphant historic premiere, choreographed by Marius Petipa in 1890 at the Mariinsky Theatre.

Tchaikovsky’s musical mastery, Marius Petipa’s outstanding choreography, and the dramatic libretto about the power of true love and the struggle between good and evil created a magnificent work that never grows tiring, even when one knows every twist of the plot and every musical passage.

The “Russian Ballet” Theatre presents The Sleeping Beauty in a production and adaptation by Vyacheslav Gordeev, People’s Artist of the USSR, based on the libretto by Ivan Vsevolozhsky and Marius Petipa.

For this project, Gordeev received the Western European Impresarios Association award for “Best Production of 2000.”

Petipa’s choreographic art, brought to life by Vyacheslav Gordeev, along with lavish sets and costumes created by the talented designers I. Nezhny and T. Tulubyeva, make this production a brilliant highlight of the upcoming theatre season!

A legend of Russian ballet, Vyacheslav Gordeev is an outstanding dancer and former principal of the Bolshoi Theatre who devoted his entire life to ballet and also distinguished himself as a talented choreographer.

As a choreographer, Gordeev won the recognition and admiration of international ballet critics. In 1992, following the theatre’s successful tour of Europe, Gordeev was awarded the title of “Best Choreographer of the Year,” and he was soon presented with a special prize by Maurice Béjart.

The State Theatre “Russian Ballet” holds a worthy place on the international ballet scene. The company enjoys well-deserved popularity among ballet enthusiasts in Russia and abroad, alongside such renowned institutions as the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theatres.

In its review of the Russian Ballet, the English newspaper Western Morning News noted:

“Rarely does one have the opportunity to see contemporary Russian talent in such brilliance.”

In Germany, the company received the “Golden Ticket” award for attracting an audience of more than 100,000 people during a single tour.

The English publication The Journal described the theatre as a “showcase of ballet talent,” and it was named the “Best Ballet Company in Europe”—an award presented by the Western European Impresarios Association.

In Russia, the “Russian Ballet” Theatre received the prestigious national Fyodor Volkov Award, named after the founder of Russian theatrical art.
