A guided tour of Isfiya reveals the history, culture, and connections between the Druze and Jews, with a visit to an olive press and the Druze Heritage Center.
Why do the Druze have mustaches? What treasures were discovered in the heart of the village? How did a Druze dress contribute to the blood covenant between the Druze community and the Jews? How did the conservative village contribute to the development of cinema in Israel? And who are the eccentric Jews who live in this village? (I’m one of them.)
As a resident of Isfiya, naturally curious and a very thorough tour guide, I have researched and delved into the customs of the Druze, as well as the history of the village. Indeed, Isfiya is a very unique village, ethnically diverse and rich in history.
As part of the tour, you will learn about the special Druze community, with an emphasis on things that are not written on Wikipedia. You will hear about the very surprising connections between the Druze and Jews, both in the past and today; learn about unique Druze burial customs and the exceptional memorial projects commemorating fallen Druze soldiers.
We will take a fascinating tour through the alleys of the village’s historic core. Along the way, we will visit an ancient olive press, where we will practice what it is like to be a donkey... We will enjoy the views overlooking Mount Carmel and finish with a visit to the Druze Heritage Center, where two sisters will tell us about the status of women in Druze society while we drink delicious and healthy herbal tea.
At the same time, you will hear my personal story—how I ended up in the village and what it is like raising four children here.
All this and more will be presented with humor, love, and lots of hats.
