Writer Assaf Inbari in a discussion about his new book "Natan and Amos"

This is the story of the two most influential intellectuals who lived in Israel in the twentieth century, and also the story of the dispute that continues to tear Israeli society apart.

Alterman and Oz. Natan and Amos. One led the movement for Greater Israel. The other led the peace camp.

Both underwent transformations. Natan, David’s court prophet, became his opponent. Amos, who participated in Ben-Gurion’s ouster, became his admirer. Natan, who stood at the heart of the consensus for many years, became a controversial activist. Amos, born at the heart of the right wing, became the left’s chief ideologue.

The story of Natan and Amos’s rise to their unique status as secular prophets is interwoven with their family histories, the women in their lives, and their development as creators. Their involvement in Israeli history as it unfolded—beginning with the Lavon Affair and reaching its peak in the Six-Day War—is a stirring personal and political drama whose consequences we are still living with.

This is Assaf Inbari’s fourth book. His historical novels—Homeward, The Tank, and The Red Book—have forged a new path in Hebrew literature and changed the way the foundational events of Zionism and the State of Israel are told.
