After his promising music career is cut short, he travels around New York with his mentor, Harry Horowitz (played by Dustin Hoffman), and meets a variety of characters, including the Israeli character Uri, played by Lior Raz, and Ruthie, a composition student with whom he forms an unexpected connection.
