Ecce Homo - Behold the Man II
Overnight stay at the Ecce Homo Monastery and a walk across the rooftops of Jerusalem’s Old City. Starts Thursday at 15:00 at Jaffa Gate.
At the beginning of October, we are once again going to spend the night in Jerusalem’s monasteries. Since we had enough rooms in September, I decided to repeat the overnight stay at the Ecce Homo Monastery (“Behold the Man”). The monastery is located along the Way of Sorrows—the Via Dolorosa. Huge cisterns from the Antonia Fortress, Roman triumphal gates, and paving have been discovered in the monastery’s underground areas. The roof of Ecce Homo is considered one of the Old City’s most beautiful and difficult-to-reach observation points.
The nuns of the Order of Our Lady of Zion are ready to let us stay at the monastery from Thursday to Friday. I have again negotiated a price of $60 per person (180 shekels).
Those planning to stay overnight, please report the number of people interested in the chat as soon as possible so I have time to reserve the rooms. The number of hostel places is limited:
WALKING TOUR PLAN FOR THURSDAY
We will meet on Thursday at 15:00 near the Jaffa Gate. At the beginning of the walk, we will visit the Ecce Homo Monastery and leave our extra belongings there. (You may arrive at the monastery later and skip the evening walk.)
We will then follow a route across the rooftops of the Old City. The walk will be circular. We will return to the hostel around 9–10 p.m. If there are interested participants, we will visit the Western Wall closer to midnight.
WALKING TOUR PLAN FOR FRIDAY
On Friday at 7:00, we will set out for a walk across the rooftops of the Old City. We will then visit the underground areas in the City of David and walk through Hezekiah’s Tunnel. For part of the route, we will be walking in water up to our knees.
The route will end around noon.
Bring some small change for admission to paid attractions (approximately 30 shekels), water, a snack, and comfortable shoes.
Everything needed for the overnight stay is available at the hostel.
Those who need help getting to the starting point of the route, please write in the trip chat. I will try to help closer to the date of the hike.
The guide’s services are “conditionally free.” As is customary at apartment concerts, at the end of the hike everyone may put as much as they wish into the hat.
The organizer’s costs for the hike and route research amount to 600–1,000 shekels and require a great deal of time. Your donations make it possible to continue the project and prepare new routes. Our hikes attract all kinds of people—from Masa participants and new immigrants to seasoned programmers. For this reason, we try not to specify an amount. The main thing is for all participants to feel comfortable.
