Who should take this course?
This course is appropriate for those who have completed Intermediate III Yiddish or equivalent coursework.
What topics will this class cover?
This class will build on and consolidate the language background acquired in Intermediate III Yiddish. As in the past semesters of the Intermediate cycle, we will work with Sheva Zucker’s Yiddish: Introduction to the Language, Literature & Culture, Vol. II. This fall, we will cover Chapters 18a, 18b, 19a, and 19b (pp. 177-245). These will be complemented with additional materials drawn from other sources. We will engage with all of the grammatical topics that make up the aforementioned chapters, including the possessive form of common nouns, indirect questions, numeral adverbs, and precision regarding numerals, time terms and units of measurement. Cultural and historical subjects addressed during the upcoming semester will include Jewish political movements, the Yiddish press in the 20th century, and global Yiddish-speaking diasporas. The class will also approach Jewish holidays that fall during the semester and various aspects of yidishkayt more broadly.
