Bitter Christmas tells the story of Raúl, a famous director in the midst of a writing crisis. Drawing inspiration from events in the life of his personal assistant, he creates the character of Elsa—a director writing her own screenplay, on a journey that increasingly comes to resemble his own. As the two screenwriters gradually become one, their lives turn into an intriguing game of truth, fiction, and one question: how far can one go for art?
Bitter Christmas marks Almodóvar’s return to the films that made him most famous, with a fascinating, moving, and intelligent story told through spectacular, colorful, and emotional cinema.
