Long before the time when Moses wandered with his people in the desert, numerous groups of hunters, gatherers, and early pastoralists settled the Negev and Sinai, leaving behind abundant traces of their presence. Tiny hunting camps, vast settlements where people returned over many generations, rock faces covered with petroglyphs, permanent villages, and sanctuaries—all are found in the desert. For a prehistorical archaeologist, the desert is paradise: Paleolithic sites that have long been destroyed by later construction and agriculture or buried under meters of sediment elsewhere lie literally on the surface here.
At the next meeting with archaeologist Zinovy Matskevich via Zoom on August 24 at 19:30 Israel Time, we will examine the history of settlement in the Negev, Sinai, and the Jordanian desert, discussing how people adapted to harsh desert conditions.
