A filmmaker gathers his favorite actresses—those he has worked with and those he loves. He observes them, draws inspiration, and writes a screenplay that takes their stories to Rome in the 1970s, where sisters Alberta and Gabriella run a prestigious fashion house. The sound of sewing machines and the voices of the seamstresses fill it from morning till night. Excitement and pressure mount when the sisters receive an invitation to design costumes for an important period film directed by Lorenzo and starring the famous actress Sofia Wolff.
The story of these women is told from a new perspective—that of the costumes. Among loneliness, desires, anxieties, heartbreaking absence, and unbreakable bonds, reality and fiction are intertwined, as are the lives of the actresses and the characters they portray, the competition, and the camaraderie, the seen and the unseen. "Diamonds" was a tremendous success in Italy and became one of the most successful films in Özpetek's career.
