A guided tour about the history of the Hospitallers—in the Knights’ Halls of Acre.
“…How Almighty God established your order in His Church as a pillar standing on the foundation of obedience, for the necessary protection of the Holy Land, in which you are renowned athletes, mighty warriors, and chosen champions, and for whose defense you have girded yourselves with the symbol of the cross to fight in a holy war against the infidels in the name of God.” — To the Master and Brothers of the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, from Pope Alexander IV, 1259.

This tour offers an exciting immersion into the era of the Crusaders and the history of the Knights Hospitaller. After losing Jerusalem, in the 13th century the monk-knights built their new impregnable headquarters in Acre. Today, these magnificent Knights’ Halls, uncovered by archaeologists, have become one of Israel’s main attractions. They preserve the memory both of the order’s golden age and of the city’s tragic fall.
Under the castle’s ancient vaults, you will learn how daily life was organized in a medieval knights’ quarter. We will discuss the foundations of the Hospitallers’ influence, their trade monopolies, and their rivalry with the Templars. You will see unique finds, unravel mysteries hidden in architectural details, and vividly imagine the last dramatic days of the defense of legendary Acre.
